New to Motion Systems? Start Here (Glossary)
3DOF (Three Degrees of Freedom)
Refers to three independent motion axes — pitch (forward/back tilt), roll (side tilt), and heave (up/down motion). The simulator moves dynamically along these axes to reproduce the feel of acceleration, braking, and cornering forces.
Actuator
An electro-mechanical device that converts digital control signals into physical motion. In motion simulators, actuators lift, tilt, or shift the platform precisely to simulate real-world forces.
Motion Platform
The structural base that houses actuators, mounts, and mechanical joints. It moves the cockpit or seat according to real-time telemetry from the simulator software.
Direct-Drive Wheelbase
A steering motor system that connects the wheel directly to the motor shaft — no gears or belts — for instantaneous torque response and realistic steering feel.
Qubic System (QS)
A Polish manufacturer known for high-precision motion control systems (e.g., QS-220 actuators). Their products are used in professional racing and flight simulators worldwide.
DOF (Degree of Freedom)
Each independent motion axis (surge, sway, heave, roll, pitch, yaw). More DOFs = more realistic motion replication.
